What Happens During a Sleep Cycle?

Each 90-minute sleep cycle moves through four distinct stages, and understanding them helps explain why the timing of your alarm matters so much.

N1 — Light Sleep. The transition from wakefulness to sleep. Your muscles begin to relax, your heart rate slows, and your brain produces theta waves. This stage lasts only a few minutes and is the easiest to be woken from — which is why a noise or vibration at this point barely feels like sleep at all.

N2 — Light Sleep. The longest stage in most cycles, accounting for roughly half of your total sleep time. Body temperature drops, eye movements stop, and your brain produces sleep spindles — bursts of activity thought to play a role in memory consolidation. You are harder to wake here than in N1, but still relatively close to the surface.

Why Sleep Cycles Matter

Most sleep advice focuses on total hours. Eight hours, seven hours, six hours. But the number alone misses something important: sleep is not uniform across the night, and when you wake up within that time matters as much as how long you sleep.

Each cycle ends at a natural transition point — a brief, partial awakening that most people never consciously register. Waking at this point feels completely different from being jolted out of deep N3 or mid-REM. The difference is not subtle. Alarm timing can determine whether you feel functional or foggy for the first two hours of your day, regardless of how many total hours you slept.

The distribution of stages also shifts as the night progresses. Deep sleep (N3) is concentrated in the first two or three cycles; REM sleep accumulates in the final cycles.
